"We would have open class debates. And, uh... I'd just sit there and listen. He said 'We can't tweak a nerve! I don't understand.' 'Well,' I said, 'let's talk about something important.' And he said 'We have been...' and I said 'No, not really, when you think about it.' So we got into a discussion about what was important and what wasn't. And I said 'I have an acquaintance, who shall remain nameless for obvious reasons in a minute - He told me about getting in a firefight over six canteens of water. Four people died over six canteens of water. The fuck we talk about in this class that's really important?' And everybody's sitting there with that deer-in-the-headlights look, and I said 'Folks, this really happened. Twelve people were about to dehydrate to death. They had a choice: They went and they got water - or they died. I said 'Now, then... here I am, I'm a defending force; I know where all the water is and I know eventually somebody's gonna have to have some of it, so I stick some people at this spring to wait for the people that show up that are about to dehydrate to death. Who do you think has the advantage - the home team or the away team? 'I sneak up on this spring.... you've got a 50/50 shot. I don't know where that spring is, I walked across the ridge and there it is, you see me first or I see you first. 'That's what it comes down to.'"

I heard a rumor come through the vine You fell off the wagon, had a real rough time Smokin' that shit, you gonna kill yourself Well, it ain't my fault that you got nothing else Hide it from your family, hide it from your kin You score twenty bucks and run to do it again You think I can save you? That's just a dream I ain't playin' knight to a white trash queen You know it's a shame 'bout the world we're in Once you get started you just can't win Once you get in you can't get out It's the other side of the American South Doin' my best to get above this life It chases me down no matter how hard I try Got a past full of assholes, dope fiends and whores And I can't live in that world no more Just heard tell of double homicide Baby found in its mama's arms crying These the kind of people you been hanging around? Well it's a matter of time 'til you can't be found You know it's a shame 'bout the world we're in Once you get started you just can't win Once you get in you can't get out It's the other side of the American South If this is the life that you wanna live One piece of advice is all I got to give Keep your guard up and get yourself a gun And don't tell no one 'bout the things you've done You know it's a shame 'bout the world we're in Once you get started you just can't win Once you get in you can't get out It's the other side of the American South

"'In this instance, the two guys on the away team saw the guys on the home team first. They snuck around behind them, they stood up on the ridge, they set their rifles on fast-forward, and they cut 'em in half. They went down there, filled up six canteens of water, and run like hell.' I said 'This is reality. THIS is important. Anything about government.... it's all bullshit.' And he said 'You have a strange sense of what's important.' And I said 'We need to start thinking more about each other, and less about things.' And I had to write a paper... not to exceed three pages... see previous rule... he got thiry handwritten pages - thirty of MY handwritten pages, which means he had a bitch of a time reading it. But, uh... one of the girls in the class, she said 'I thought you was [unintelligible]. I thought that, in today's society, there was no way that this actually happened.' And what she did was... her dad was a Marine in Korea. And she went home one weekend after my little spiel: 'Daddy, I've got a guy in my class, I need to ask you about something he said. The only thing I wanna know is if you can see it actually happening.' She said he didn't even have to think. He said 'Absolutely that could happen! Why do you think something like that COULDN'T happen?' So we started having discussions about what's real... what IS important."
